US Defense Department Cuts Ties with Anthropic, Citing National Security Risks
The Pentagon has severed all ties with artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, implementing an immediate ban on its technology across the U.S. military and federal government. Defense Secretary Pete announced the decision via social media, framing it as a response to President Trump's directive against Anthropic's AI systems.
Anthropic had previously sought restrictions on military applications of its technology, including prohibitions on autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. The company's stance drew sharp criticism from defense officials, who characterized these limits as an attempt to influence operational decisions.
"This organization's principles are fundamentally incompatible with American values," Secretary Pete stated. The Defense Department has designated Anthropic as a national security threat within its supply chain, barring military contractors from using its technology.
